Welcome

Gulf Coast Violinist/Fiddler Tom Morley

Greetings and welcome to The Fiddle Center. I’m your host, Fiddler/Violinist Tom Morley. I’m a classically-trained violinist with a degree in music education, but I’ve earned a living with my violin in almost every conceivable musical direction. I’ve played professionally on stage and in the recording studio in Celtic, Cajun, country, folk, classical, swing and jazz styles. As an educator, I’ve taught in public schools and universities, given private lessons, group lessons, fiddle workshops, Irish Traditional Music slow sessions, ‘informances’ and lectures on the history of Irish and American fiddling. You can read more about me on my bio page.

Over the last decade and a half in particular, I’ve focused on the rich repertoire of Irish fiddle music (and its related American and Old-Time offspring). I hope to share my enjoyment of it here and make this site a fresh resource for everyone who plays fiddle at any level, from beginner to advanced.

The Fiddle Center is not just for fiddlers and violinists, however. I’m available to give workshops, lectures, ‘informances’ and performances, as a solo violinist or as a member of my various performing groups.

So whether you’re a fiddler or violinist yourself, or in need of one, explore my Educational & Performance Resource pages. Hopefully you’ll see something that will be of interest to you. Or leave a comment at my News & Updates blog or at my facebook page. Stop by The Fiddle Center any time!

The latest news here at The Fiddle Center…

Published in 2012, my tutorial book/CD set Learn To Play Irish Trad Fiddle is a collection of 50 Irish jigs, reels, polkas and more, with playing hints and the history behind the tunes, and includes a CD with me playing every selection. It’s written for advanced beginner and intermediate students of any age and can be used alone or as supplemental material with any string method. In other words, it’s for just about everybody! I’ve tried to make this book appealing to students with either classical or fiddling background, for string educators or self-taught players. Visit the companion website–www.irishtradfiddle.com–to learn more about the book and order your copy…or feel free to contact me at: thefiddlecenter@gmail.com for more information. It’s being used by players and string teachers around the US and has received very positive reviews from respected music magazines including Irish Music magazine and Fiddler magazine. (Read the full reviews at my blog post here!)

My latest musical project is a duoBanna de dhá, featuring myself on fiddle and Hazel Ketchum (of Charleston, SC) on guitar and vocals. The name is a loose ‘American meets Irish’ translation for “band of two,” but the musical whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Taking our inspiration from great Irish Traditional music duos, Banna de dhá uses the repertoire of Irish instrumental and vocal music as our starting point, while keeping it all fresh and unique with unexpected improvisational turns. In the short time the duo has been together, we’ve performed around the southern U.S., opened for top Irish bands including We Banjo 3 and Solas, and received airplay on radio stations around the country. Read more about Banna de dhá here, and listen to samples from our CD Band of Two here. The CD is available at CD Baby and iTunes.

My solo fiddle CD, The Raven’s Wing (a curious collection of fiddle tunes), continues to receive airplay at stations around the US & Europe. It includes fiddle tunes from many of the genres I’ve enjoyed playing over the years, and features a number of great guest musicians. You can read more about the project at my blog and order it from CD Baby here.

“This is a diverse and powerful collection of tunes, running the gamut from Irish jigs to Texas swing, with a bit of bluegrass, old-time folk, and jazz in between, delivered and arranged by one of the unsung masters of the fiddler’s craft.”

Frye Gaillard, Americana Gazette May 2011

My Celtic/World music group MITHRIL most current CD, Along the Road, is our 6th album! It’s our usual mix of traditional Irish jigs & reels played with lots of energy, sweet and beautiful slow airs, and some exotic melodies and rhythms thrown in for good measure. It’s available for purchase or download at cdbaby.com, and also available on iTunes too!
