CelticFest MS brings great Irish music to Jackson

CelticFest Mississippi is back for their 19th year this weekend (Sept. 10-12) and I’m excited about attending. I’ve been to this excellent festival in Jackson  a number of times over the past few years, both as a casual observer and as a performer with my band Mithril. But due to the obligations of the rest of my Mithril bandmates, we won’t be performing, so I’m heading there as an observer (for the most part) this time once again.

I’ll be sitting in with some good friends of mine, actually-guitarist Clark Lowery and fiddler Bill Rogers, who perform as the Laurel, MS-based band known as Emerald Accent. It will be fun to kick into some jigs, reels, hornpipes and waltzes with the boys during several of their Saturday sets, and sure enough I’d be disappointed to be surrounded by Irish music all day and not be playing some of it myself!

I’m particularly excited about seeing CelticFest headliners Téada, one of the finest Irish bands around today. They’ll be playing several sets on Saturday and I don’t intend to miss one of them! If you haven’t heard of this group of talented young musicians, check out their website (www.teada.com/joomla/) where you can listen to selections from their CDs and watch videos of them performing. Fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada will be giving a workshop and I plan to be there to attend that as well.

I could go on & on about all the great performances and activities at CelticFest this weekend, but visit their website at www.celticfestms.org to learn more. Maybe I’ll see some of you readers there!
