O’Connor Method Camp 2012 is History-A Wonderful Experience for All

The 2nd Annual Mark O’Connor String Method Camp is history, and it was a wonderful experience for students and faculty members alike. I had a fantastic time, returning to beautiful Charleston, SC as a faculty member for the second year in a row, teaching several classes of eager students jigs, reels, polkas and other tunes from the Irish Traditional music repertoire (and adapted from my new book/CD set, Learn to Play Irish Trad Fiddle).

As it explains in the Method Statement for the camp: “The purpose of the O’Connor Method Camps is to bring teachers and young students of the violin and related string instruments together from near and far to experience a week of intensive training featuring American based music, playing styles, techniques and history, utilizing the O’Connor Method Book series. Private classes, group classes, master classes, string orchestras and ensembles, specialty electives, recitals and jam sessions combine to enhance technique, promote creativity, foster a deeper understanding of American music and, most importantly, create an environment in which to experience the joy of making music with other children”.

American music is of course a great ‘melting pot’ of styles that have been brought to these shores by immigrants for well over 300 years, and I am proud to be on the camp faculty talking about and teaching music that could be considered the ‘tap root’ of American Roots music.

Here are some photos from the camp:

A group of string teachers from Lagos, Nigeria, attended the camp and reminded us all that music is the universal language.

Every afternoon after classes & recital time there was a 'jam session' attended by all students and faculty. Mark O'Connor himself was there to play along and inspire us all!

My Irish Trad group performed on one the daily recitals. Each fiddler added their own Irish ornaments as learned during class.

Here I am working with one of my classes. We learned several Irish Trad tunes from music & by ear.

My daughter and I have attended the last two years at the Mark O’Connor camp. I just wanted to say Tom is an excellent teacher. And, it’s been a joy to hear him play! We are so fortunate to have had these experiences and hope to see you at camp this coming summer 2013? Thank you!
